Top quality lumber from the managed forests of Northern New Brunswick.
PREMIUM and SELECT
Premium and Select grades are considered the highest quality lumber, from a ‘visual’ perspective. They are not an ‘official’ grade according to either the National Lumber Grades Association (NLGA) or the Maritime Lumber Bureau (MLB) as the structure is no different than the # 2 and better grade, for construction purposes (strength). However, from an appearance point of view, it is the nicest piece of lumber with no visual defects, such as wane, rot, knots, twist, warp. This is sold to Home Centers across North America, at a “Premium” price. Each piece is stamped with the word “Prime”. In marketing these products, sawmills use there own unique way of describing its appearance, which are interchangeable; Prime, Select, Premium, Clear.
#2 and Better (BTR)
The # 2 and BTR grade, refers to lumber that meets the # 2 grade of both the NLGA and the MLB, and meets the structural requirements of home builders, including trusses, floor joists, etc., and is considered the strongest grade. Several states in the US, require a # 2 and better stamp in their building codes. It is not a perfect “looking” piece of lumber, as it does not have to be “square”, but it must meet the structural requirements (strength). For example, there cannot be any soft rot, warp, or large knots that could affect its structure. The term # 2 and better (BTR) means it must meet the # 2 grade, at a minimum, or better. The actual MLB, NLGA stamp says no. 2.
Stud
The “stud” grade would be considered an average, acceptable grade for certain use, but not all, building applications.
It is called “stud”, as it is generally used for the “studding” of the house, or construction of the interior walls, which are not used for structural integrity.
In other words, a “stud” grade may actually appear nicer looking than a # 2, because it is generally more square, but because it is allowed to have large knots, some small % of soft rot, it can’t be used in certain structural building applications, such as a “truss”.
Stud grade lumber is squarer, in order to allow for a nailing edge, when installing drywall.
The MLB / NLGA stamp says “Stud”.

PMO
Planer mill outs, or PMO, is considered the lowest quality lumber from a “visual” perspective. It is not an “official” grade either, according to both the NLGA or MLB, as it contains several defects, and therefore does not meet the standard for home construction, as there is no structural value. Because of this, there is no PMO stamp and therefore is not inspected by the MLB. Some sawmills refer to this grade as Economy.
Green Rough Lumber
We also produce green rough lumber. These products are sold to industrial customers such as fencing manufacturers, pallet plants, bed frame producers and the packaging industry.
